Pi‘ilani was the first Ali‘i to unite Maui island under a single rule, and his reign was known more for its peaceful times. His father and grandfathers all came from Western Maui and for the first time they now controlled the Eastern side of Maui as well. Pi‘ilani began the construction of a roadway that would encircle the entire island, it was wide enough for 8 men to walk beside each other and was the first of its kind in the islands. He died with it still in construction but it was completed by his son and some parts of todays Pi‘ilani highway follow the old path, where in places the old stones are still visible.
