MAKOA PENCIL & INK ILLUSTRATION (CARD #2)
MAKOA PENCIL & INK ILLUSTRATION (CARD #2)
son of Kahiwalani(Pi’o) and his sister Kaiamililima. Rank is double Wohi.
Makoa’s lineage descends from the royal lines of Maui and Kakuhihewa. He was the Kukini in Kamehameha’s court and was with him wherever he went. When Makoa received Kamehameha’s command, he committed all his speed so that the flap of his Malo stood straight out behind and as he would the Hilo bay, its sands were blown upward by the speed of his passage. When his cloak was seen fluttering on his speedy paths, not even the greatest Ali’i could obstruct his way. He was never spoken to or stopped unless by his own accord to rest or get water. It was also said that his speed exceeded that of a horse’s gallop. On one mission, he runs from Kawaihae to Kaipalaoa, Hilo (65+ miles) on diplomatic terms requesting certain foods including fish from Kamehameha’s uncle, Keawemauhili. He receives the fish wrapped and bundled in limu and ti leaves, returning to Kawaihae with the fish still alive.
